Note: This article was written before we caught the screening of The Darkest Minds. Hence it doesn’t contain our commentary on the quality of the film itself.
The Darkest Minds is hitting Malaysian cinemas on the 16th of August. Here are three reasons why you might wanna check this one out in cinemas. Also, if you’d like to win tickets to catch the preview screening of The Darkest Minds (on the 14th of August), we’ll let you know how at the end of this article.
1. A cool trailer
Look, we don’t know if the movie is gonna be great or one big steaming pile of hot garbage, but you gotta admit that the trailer is pretty damn cool! The film is about a bunch of superpowered kids who form a resistance group to fight back and reclaim control of their future from the adults who want them dead. And judging by the trailer, this could be a fun mashup of X-Men and The Hunger Games.
2. A superhero movie not from DC and Marvel
Yeah yeah, we know. We’ve got a crap ton of superhero movies already. In the span of seven months, we got Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Incredibles 2. And don’t forget, Aquaman will be hitting the big screens this December. But you see, five out of the six movies listed above are either from the Marvel or DC comics camp. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, especially considering the quality of most of those movies, it’s always nice to get something different; something that isn’t based on these mainstream comics. The Darkest Minds is a superhero movie based on the Alexandra Bracken’s novel of the same name. If you like superhero movies, then perhaps you might wanna give this one a shot.
3. It has a female director
We often complain about the lack of female and non-white film directors in Hollywood. Well, The Darkest Minds is helmed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who’s both — wait for it — female and not white. While this alone doesn’t guarantee the quality of the film, it’s always great to see minorities given a platform to showcase their talents. Besides, Jennifer Yuh Nelson is no rookie helmer. She’s the woman behind the animated films Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3. The Darkest Minds will be her first foray into live-action feature territory.
