Rise Ini Kalilah is Coming to Netflix

This will be a good addition to the Netflix library.

Malaysian drama film, Rise Ini Kalilah has been picked up by Netflix and will go to air from Feb. 26, per Variety. The film released in Malaysian theatres and in Singapore in September.

It was produced by Fred Chong through his Prodigee Film company and backed by his digital media outfit WebTVAsia. WebTVAsia produces original content and acts as a multi-channel network for some 2,500 Asian creators. Chong said:

“The world wants to know how a small democracy like Malaysia managed to make a monumental political shift without violence and bloodshed. So I told this story from the lens of six normal citizens, to demonstrate that the power of change comes from unity and determination of its people, not the elected politicians.”

Rise Ini Kalilah is a Malaysian movie that’s inspired by the events leading up to GE14. The film follows the lives of several Malaysians in the days leading up to the GE14 on May 9.

Rise Ini Kalilah was directed by Saw Teong Hin, Nik Amir Mustapha and Prem Nath. The film features a star-studded cast which includes Remy Ishak, Jack Tan, Sangeeta Krishnasamy and Mira Filzah. Other cast members include Jenn Chia, Shashi Tharan, Mark O’Dea, Frederick Lee, Sharifah Sakinah and Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan.

Remy Ishak will play a policeman, whilst Sangeeta Krishnasamy will take up the role of a school teacher that’s struggling to receive funding. Jack Tan, meanwhile, will play a Malaysian that’s working in Singapore, who is finding a way to come home to vote.

Rise Ini Kalilah received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Our resident film critic Dashran Yohan described the film as such: Rise Ini Kalilah is the stalest and warmest of beers. It is Coke Zero. It is a vegan pizza. It is a bodybuilder’s diet two weeks before competition day.
