Infinity War Inches Closer Towards The Force Awakens At The Global Box Office

Perhaps it just may beat Star Wars’ record.

In my previous box office editorial, I discussed in detail why Avengers: Infinity War will not outgross Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the global box office. I still stand by my statement. Because of massive competition from Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, in the current and coming weeks, the amount of money Infinity War rakes in will begin to dwindle noticeably.

But despite my prediction, it cannot be ignored that there is still a possibility that Infinity War will actually go on to join the US$ 2 billion club and maybe, just maybe overtake The Force Awakens. It all boils down to whether or not the 19th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can keep up its massive momentum outside of the US. In the US, the movie earned another US$ 29 million on its fourth weekend, which is a whole US$ 11 million behind Black Panther’s fourth weekend.

Infinity War is currently the 8th highest grossing movie of all time in the US, behind the likes of The Last JediBlack Panther and even Jurassic World.

Judging by this week’s (-53%) drop, I predict that Infinity War will end its run slightly above The Avengers as the 6th highest grossing movie of all time, in the US. Perhaps if it chugs a few bottles of Gatorade, it might have the legs to overtake Jurassic World‘s US$ 652 million. But anything beyond that seems highly unlikely.

Now, Infinity War may be hanging out with the popular kids in the US. But outside of the US Infinity War (US$ 1.2 billion) is one of the hottest cheerleaders in school. As of right now, it has already zoomed past Jurassic World (US$ 1 billion) and steamrolled past The Force Awakens (US 1.1 billion) and Furious 7 ( US$ 1.1 billion — yes, it’s hot shit outside of the US), all while flashing its middle finger to Black Panther (US$ 647 million). Outside of the US, Infinity War is currently the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time.

But even so, judging by how much it earned outside of the US this past weekend — US$ 84 million — it seems unlikely that it’ll be able to outgross Titanic outside of the US. Let’s not even talk about Avatar which grossed more than US$ 2 billion outside of the US alone. But we have to keep in mind that Avatar had a couple of rereleases within the same year of its initial release, while Titanic had over a bazillion rereleases, to help boost their box office numbers.

Globally, Infinity War (US$ 1.8 billion) is currently sitting at fourth place behind The Force Awakens (US$ 2 billion), Titanic (US$ 2.1 billion) and Avatar (US$ 2.7 billion).
