Dwayne Johnson Confirms He’s Not In Fast & Furious 9

Fans who are hoping that means the actor will be moving on to Fast & Furious 9 might want to brace themselves for disappointment.

After teasing fans that the upcoming spin-off Hobbs & Shaw will feature the “biggest showdown” the franchise has ever seen, Dwayne Johnson has now revealed that he might not be in Fast & Furious 9 next year.

Speaking to MTV News, the Rock explained: “The plan has always been for the Fast and Furious universe to grow and expand. As of now, we’re not in Fast 9 because they’re getting ready to start shooting. But who knows with Fast 10 down the road, you never know. Because, look, at the end of the day, the truth is there’s unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom [Vin Diesel]. It’s unfinished,” he added.

Given the popularity of Hobbs, it could be seen as an odd move to not have the character appear in Fast & Furious 9 at all. While Dwayne Johnson sitting out the movie could purely be a result of the actor’s wildly busy schedule, there’s likely still simmering tension between Johnson and Diesel that needs to be cleared first before they work together again. Last year, Johnson opened up about his feud with Diesel, confirming that the pair didn’t film together on Fast & Furious 8.

Hobbs & Shaw will see Dwayne reprise his role as Luke Hobbs from the Fast & Furious movies. The film will also star Jason Statham as the returning Deckard Shaw, along with Idris Elba, and Vanessa Kirby. Hobbs & Shaw will be released in cinemas on August 2, 2019. Fast & Furious 9 is set to be released in cinemas on April 20, 2020.
