Joe Russo Confirms That Venom Isn’t Part Of The MCU

Venom is part of Sony’s new cinematic universe.

No one really knows the specifics of the deal between Marvel and Sony for Spider-Man. There have been many questions raised regarding Sony’s Spider-Man universe and its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first film in Sony’s new cinematic universe will be this October’s Venom, and according to the Russo Brothers, it is not part of the MCU whatsoever.

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo held a talk while he was at his old school Iowa City High earlier this week. One of those in attendance asked him about the possibilities of Tom Hardy’s Venom tying into the MCU. His response was short and straight to the point:

“No, that’s a Sony property.”

Venom will see Tom Hardy take up the role of reporter Eddie Brock. When Eddie begins investigating Life Foundation, his girlfriend Annie’s (Michelle Williams) business associate, his life changes forever. Eddie’s investigation then leads him to a dark discovery. As it turns out, Life Foundation leader Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) has discovered an alien life form called symbiotes, which can bond to human hosts and give them horrific powers. He ends up being a test subject for the symbiote bonding process. Eddie soon discovers that the alien is a sentient figure now living inside of him. When it comes out, Eddie becomes the nightmarish monster known as Venom.

Venom will mostly be a standalone story, and it seems destined to remain disconnected from Spider-Man. Ruben Fleischer will direct this film which stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, Scott Haze and Woody Harrelson.

Venom drops in cinemas on October 4.
