Brooklyn Nine-Nine Is Cancelled

The hit comedy series gets cancelled after 5 seasons.

We are truly living in the Golden Age of television. In recent years, the gap between television and film has not only been bridged, but some would say television has surpassed film. With the emergence of online streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, as well as the traditional cable networks like FX, CW and AMC, there is no shortage of quality programming out there. One show that’s won the hearts of many is Fox’s regular, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The beloved police sitcom has consistently been one of the most popular shows on TV, spanning 5 seasons. However, on Thursday afternoon, Fox axed the hit comedy. It comes as no surprise that a widespread negative reaction followed this news.

Variety reported the news of the cancellation earlier today. It’s certainly a dark day for comedy lovers. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has had a positive influence on many. It’s one of the funniest shows on TV, with it’s over the top hilarity and inside jokes. Aside from the humour it offers, the show can get serious at times. There was an entire episode last season regarding racial profiling when another officer stopped Sgt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) on the street in front of his own home. The show has also dealt with homophobia in the police force. The show has also given us one of our favourite TV couples, Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine also boasts an insanely diverse cast. Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy, marveled that there were two Latina women in the main cast when the show was initially picked up in 2013. That was very rare, even five years ago. Stephanie Beatriz’s character, detective Rosa Diaz, came out as bisexual in the fifth season. Andre Braugher, who plays Capt. Raymond Holt, who frequently spoke of the challenges of being a gay, African American cop in the New York Police Department.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine starred Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio and Chelsea Peretti. In its time on air, the series also earned a fair amount of awards attention. It received the Golden Globe for best comedy series in 2014, and Samberg earned the statue for best actor in a comedy the same year. Braugher also earned three Emmy nominations for his work on the show.

One bright side is that at least Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cancellation comes after the show hit the 100-episode mark. Brooklyn Nine-Nine still has two episodes to air as part of its current season. Its season 5 finale, which centers on Jake and Amy’s wedding, will now serve as the series finale. It will air on May 20.
