Lando Is Pansexual, Solo Writers Confirm

Haters are going to have a field day with this.

Disney has no doubt been pushing boundaries with its properties in regards to both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars franchise. With the MCU’s introduction of a black lead in Black Panther and with the introduction of Rey as the first female lead in a Star Wars film, it’s only a matter of time they address the LGBT community. It has been confirmed that the iconic Lando Calrissian has a very fluid sexuality and may be pan-sexual.

Solo: A Star Wars Story writers Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan spoke to The Huffington Post on Lando’s sexuality when asked directly on the topic. Jonathan Kasdan responded:

“I would say yes….There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of. He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun”

Huffington asked this in light of his actions and flirty behavior with every living thing in Solo. This includes his droid L3. Lawrence on the other hand, who is the father of Jonathan (this is not another brother-brother situation) and also director of The Empire Strikes Back was far more ambiguous when asked about some jokes made by the droid pertaining to Lando’s flirtatious attitude towards Han Solo:

“That is her personality. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t.”

Lando was introduced in Empire and had a flirtatious demeanour from his introduction but it was mostly directed towards Leia. If this were the case, The Kasdans definitely know the character well enough to know what they’re doing. Solo is receiving mostly positive reviews but not to the likes of the critically acclaimed Force Awakens and Rogue One but with this in mind, the film is still something to check out once it hits theatres on May 23.
