Ryan Reynolds Originally Thought Idea For Deadpool 2 Mid-Credits Scene Was Cheating

Good thing it worked out in the end.

Deadpool is known for taking some risks, but even Ryan Reynolds thought one of the mid-credit scenes in Deadpool 2 was “cheating.”

Near the beginning of Deadpool 2, the title character’s girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), is murdered in front of him. It’s a tragedy that haunts Deadpool throughout the movie. Reynolds told the Empire Film Podcast that he was a little hesitant about using Cable’s time-traveling device to save Vanessa in a mid-credits scene.

“I was like, ‘No, we can’t bring Vanessa back! That’s cheating! But then I was like, ‘Wait a second though.’ That’s how all the great ideas in the movie start. Somebody will suggest something like sometimes I’ll suggest something that’s so dumb, and Rhett and Paul will be like ‘Yes, that is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard. But, if we added this and this and this, it makes it worthwhile. So David suggested we go back and save Vanessa, Rhett [Reese], Paul [Wernick], and I thought, ‘Fine, if we’re going to go back to save Vanessa, then let’s bring back Peter, let’s kill Baraka-pool, and let’s execute Ryan Reynolds.’”

Reynolds’ initial hesitation is kind of understandable since much of the film sees Deadpool dealing with the death of Vanessa. They also brought back Peter, a lovable member of the X-Force who died horribly in the film and killed the Origins version of Deadpool, along with Reynolds himself just before he reads the script for Green Lantern.

After the film was released, it was confirmed that the scene was in fact canon. Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 features Ryan Reynolds, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Son, with newcomers Zazie Beetz, Josh Brolin, Julian Dennison and Jack Kesy.

Deadpool 2 is in theaters now.
