Kevin Smith Enjoyed The Heck Out Of Solo

It was a fun movie.

Solo: A Star Wars Story isn’t faring too well at the box-office. It may receive some of its earnings back but it only just managed to break even since its release nearly 2 weeks ago. This isn’t great considering it’s a major blockbuster, let alone a Star Wars film. It is also the third lowest rated major Star Wars film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 71% behind Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and only ahead of the other two god-awful prequels. With this, the word that comes to mind would be ‘disappointment’. Filmmaker and Star Wars aficionado Kevin Smith, on the other hand, thinks otherwise.

Smith, noted for his independent films such as romantic comedy Chasing Amy and the masterpiece that is Clerks defended Solo, and thought it was a fun film. During an episode of Fat Man on Batman in which Smith hosts alongside Marc Bernardin, Smith provides his thoughts on the film:

“I enjoyed it. I thought it was fun. I wrote on Twitter that I thought it was fun fan service, man. I thought there are great moments. I would have written the Han meets Chewie scene the way they did, and not because I’m like, ‘My version was better.’ I’m not that clever. I thought that was a very clever way to f***ing do it and stuff. I liked everything that referenced or tied into the f***ing other movies. At one point they referenced Bosk, and I was like ‘AAAAAAAAHHHH! I have that figure, still!”

Smith also highlighted the expectations attached to a Star Wars film along with the passionate Star Wars fan base, further stating:

“Some people treat this $#!+ more seriously, like religion, and feel like the movie is an affront to everything that is Star Wars or something. I still watch them as movies, and to me it was entertaining. They got me a few times.”

Smith has it on point when it comes to the fanservice, the film offered that in abundance and in many cases, it worked- seeing the Falcon, Han’s DL-44 blaster, and of course that epic reveal near the end. It’s safe to say that it’s best to check your expectations at the door when watching films but it’s near impossible to do so when walking into a Star Wars film cause well… It’s Star Wars.
