New MCU Films Do Not Indicate Character Resurrections

New Marvel films may be taking a different route.

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War

The events of Avengers: Infinity War has brought forth a wave of possibilities in regards to what would happen in future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos’ finger snap that wiped out half the cosmos near the end of the film brought a multitude of casualties including a number of the MCU heroes such as Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Bucky, Spider-Man and half the Guardians of the Galaxy. Although some characters have received confirmation on their demise, the upcoming slate of Marvel films have brought fans to assume that many of the characters would be resurrected. The directors of Infinity War have pointed out that may not necessarily be the case.

MCU films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man: Homecoming have sequels underway with Pratt himself confirming his reprise as Starlord. Fans are automatically assuming the resurrection of the characters. Speaking to Huffington Post, Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo casts some doubts on this. Anthony said:

“Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU. Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go from here.”

Joe expanded upon his brother’s statement, saying:

“There’s four years between ‘Guardians 2’ and ‘Infinity War.’ That’s a long time, and a lot of ‘Guardians’ stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.”

This does make some sense as Ant Man & The Wasp and Captain Marvel will be taking the prequel route or at least a route that doesn’t follow the events of Infinity War. The Wasp is set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Captain Marvel will leap all the way back to the 1990s, so this non-linear approach could work out fairly well for the MCU. It would allow Marvel to stick to their guns in regards to their deaths along with churning out new films.

Some character are definitely seeing a resurrection such as Spider-Man as Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 takes place after Infinity War but I guess it’s best not to make assumptions anytime soon in regards to the other films in store.
