Stranger Things Star Millie Bobby Brown Leaves Twitter After Becoming Homophobic Meme

The meme is absurd, but that doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

The memes giveth and the memes taketh away, and today the memes have robbed us of Millie Bobby Brown’s Twitter account. A week after trolls from the Star Wars fanbase harassed and bullied The Last Jedi’s Kelly Marie Tran off Instagram, 14-year-old Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown has deleted her Twitter account. Per Variety, she deleted her account after various Twitter users posted memes depicting her as a violent homophobe, some garnering thousands of reactions.

The Emmy-nominated actress has been plagued for the past seven months or so by the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown. Users have taken to photoshopping incredibly vile and homophobic things onto photos of the star, because of irony.

The joke here seems to be that it’s so wildly out of character and unbelievable for Millie Bobby Brown to act violently or intolerantly, that presenting her as such makes people laugh. Many participants of the meme have claimed that it was all in good fun and that the posts were never meant to offend Brown. Instead, they claimed the posts were an inside joke amongst some in the LGBT community.

Obviously, not everyone sees the humour here, particularly thanks to the star being an actual child who is clearly unamused by all of these shenanigans. No one believes the Millie Bobby Brown meme to be true. But that doesn’t mean it’s harmless. However, Brown quitting Twitter may cause a Streisand effect, in which the meme only gets more attention from trolls because of Brown’s reaction. But then again, knowing Twitter, this will probably be old news soon.
