Sony’s Venom is inching closer to the big screen and the Spawn reboot starring Jamie Foxx is looking for a 2019 release but director of the latter has big plans for both characters. Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn and director of the reboot to the 1997 of the same name intends on having a crossover between the two characters of the upcoming films.
Sony which now shares the rights to Spider-Man with Disney is attempting to reinvigorate their comic book film roster with a Rated- R Venom film this October. Spawn is also looking to be Rated-R, following the successes of films like the Deadpool series and Logan. McFarlane has had a huge impact in the field of comics, having founded Image Comics along with the creation of Spawn, an assassin sent to hell, rising again to provide us with one hellish character.
Speaking to CBR, McFarlane was asked to provide some advice to Sony for the Venom film to which he urges them to go all out with the R rating and “scare the s–t out of them”. He also brings into question of Sony distributing Spawn, saying:
“Here’s a big “What If.” What if Sony distributes Spawn? Then is it possible that in the future Sony could have a crossover with Venom and Spawn? It’s possible. So, I will be presenting that possibility to the Sony executives when we get ready.”
This sounds pretty awesome and it would no doubt make for one hell of a film. McFarlane definitely has some plans and those plans look like it could really help Sony’s Marvel Universe to compete with the Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more family oriented films.
Props to Sony despite their failed attempts but we have seen some pretty bad Rated-R superhero films before including the original Spawn and Blade: Trinity. Fingers crossed for Venom which stars powerhouse actor Tom Hardy, known for his work in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. If anyone can carry a film like this, it would be him (do yourself a favor and watch Bronson, you’ll see what I mean).
Venom is set to be released on October 5, 2018
