Bad Boys TV Spinoff L.A.’s Finest Has Found Its Home

Charter Communications is stepping up its original programming activity with a series order for the former NBC drama pilot.

Bad Boys spinoff for the small screen has been in the works ever since October 2017, and the show originally got an order for a pilot at NBC, but NBC dropped the pilot back in May. Now, the show, called L.A.’s Finest and starring Bad Boys 2 alum Gabrielle Union and franchise newcomer Jessica Alba, has a U.S. home, and it will be streaming.

L.A.’s Finest is going to be Charter Communications’ first scripted series. Charter and producers Sony Pictures Television on Tuesday announced that the drama has been picked up to series with a 13-episode order for a 2019 premiere on Spectrum’s platform. Former CSI: NY showrunner Pam Veasey has come on board as executive producer/co-showrunner of the series alongside writers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.

Charter has been active in the market for scripted originals after hiring former NBC and Chernin Entertainment exec Katherine Pope at the beginning of the year. Conversations between Charter and Sony for L.A.’s Finest started almost immediately after NBC passed on the drama. Budget concerns were said to be an initial obstacle as L.A.’s Finest is charter’s first scripted offering.

“Charter is excited to partner with top producers Sony, [Jerry] Bruckheimer and the rest of the incredible team behind and in front of the camera on our first Spectrum Original Content endeavor,” said Pope, senior VP and head of originals at Charter Communications. “Our content partnerships offer us a great opportunity to provide Spectrum customers with the dynamic, authentic and unique programming that drives value for their Spectrum subscription.

Gabrielle Union plays a police detective with a complicated past who relocates to Los Angeles from Miami and finds an odd-couple partner in Jessica Alba. Union’s role is a revival of the Syd Burnett character she played in the 2003 Sony-released actioner “Bad Boys II.” Ernie Hudson, Zack Gilford, Duane Martin, and Ryan McPartlin round out the cast.
