Ant-Man And The Wasp: Evangeline Lilly On Feminine And Masculine Fighting Styles

We’ll just see it on screen.

Ant-Man & The Wasp has good word surrounding the film with praise for its humor, charm along with the performances of stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. Following the depressing events of Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp is just what fans need. Let’s not forget that this isn’t just an Ant-Man film but also The Wasp’s film too as she’s in the title. Evangeline Lily plays The Wasp and she gets to kick some serious a– here.

It was revealed that Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne will be donning a suit near the end of Ant-Man and so she does. Not only that, she’s in the spotlight just as much as Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. Obviously, gender has been and is bound to be brought up since The Wasp is kind-of, sort-of Marvel’s first female superhero film. We’ve obviously seen female fighters in Marvel films and in many films but Lilly provides a little more as to the fighting styles she adopts in the film. Speaking to THR, she discusses her approach to her fighting bringing into aspects of femininity and masculinity in fighting styles, saying:

“In her fight scenes, as trivial as it might seem, I really pushed and fought for her to fight with elegance, grace and femininity. She moves differently than a man. I wanted her to have a signature style that little girls, like I was when I was a feminine, girly little girl, would be able to fall in love with, emulate and relate to in their own movements.”

This seems like what Lilly is doing would no doubt lead to some pretty cool fight scenes. She further elaborates on the fighting methods she learned for the film:

“When we did Ant-Man I had to study a little bit of Muay Thai and MMA style fighting,” Lilly said. “And MMA style fighting is distinctly masculine, it’s got a very masculine posture and a very masculine attack, and that was so difficult for me because I don’t move that way naturally. I really wanted to change that in this film. I wanted to move the way my body wants to move, as a more graceful, feminine woman.”

Ant-Man & The Wasp is no doubt going to deliver in the action front and with these two side by side, there’s gonna be some pretty varied fighting styles to look out for. This is the last Marvel installment of the year, so might as well check it out.
