First Official Look At Shazam! All Suited Up

Shazam’s director explains how the comics influenced the hero’s costume.

Shazam! arrives in theaters next year and fans of the DC Comics character finally have their first look at the titular hero. The first look at the costume was revealed on Wednesday, offering up a glimpse of Billy Batson in superhero form.

Entertainment Weekly unveiled the image Tuesday, which you can go check out over at their website. The image features Shazam! Zachary Levi, enjoying a soda outside a convenience store. The costume confirms what we’ve seen in images from the set and on one lone official banner for the film, but it’s still nice to finally see it in such finished detail.

Director David F. Sandberg felt it was necessary to honor the character’s Golden Age roots, hence why Shazam’s movie costume retains the short cape.  In fact, he had plenty of inspiration from Batman and other DC characters. “I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman. It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”

This may not be our only look at Shazam! in July. With Marvel absent from Hall H presentations at San Diego Comic Con July 19-22, fans expect DC to go big this year. There’s a strong possibility Warner Bros. will unveil a teaser or trailer for all their upcoming titles.
