Netflix Announces Mark Millar Comic Book Projects Including Empress And American Jesus

It’s time to get a Netflix subscription.

It’s a good time to be a Netflix subscriber and a Mark Millar fan as Netflix has announced five new projects based on the comic books of Millar. Millar is a prominent figure in the world of comics, being the mastermind behind several DC and Marvel comics along with other works including Kingsman. Many of his works have been adapted into feature films or have inspired them including the aforementioned Kingsman along with Old Man Logan which was the basis of inspiration for the acclaimed Logan. It looks like there’ll be more Millar property on the way.

Netflix acquired Millar’s company Millarworld last year and now Netflix has announced two new Millarworld television series  (Jupiter’s Legacy and American Jesus) along with three upcoming films (Empress, Huck and Sharkey The Bounty Hunter). These titles may be unfamiliar and perhaps even weird for those who don’t follow Millar’s work so here’s the low-down (can’t believe I said that):

Jupiter’s Legacy follows the first generation of superheroes who received their powers in the 1930s. In present day, they are the revered elder guard and their kids who also have powers struggle to live up to their parents reputation. So, probably some emo drama… okay, probably not as Daredevil‘s Steven S. DeKnight is set to be the showrunner and executive producer so we can expect interesting things from this.

American Jesus is the most intriguing (to me at least) as it follows a 12 year old boy who finds out he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can heal the sick, raise the dead and more importantly turn water to wine just like the real guy himself. It won’t be like Life of Brian but it’ll be pretty cool to see how they handle the book of Revelations. It’s also something to help get your Christian parents into comic books. Luke Cage‘s Everardo Gout is set to be the co-showrunner alongside Leopoldo Gout.

As for the films we have Empress which follows Queen Emporia as she escapes the palace with her children, evading her dictator husband King Morax. She has to hide from Morax and his army at all costs- plus there’s teleportation. Huck seems fairly simple as he uses his special gifts to do some good deeds. His neighbors return the favor by keeping a lid on it but of course, a newcomer alerts the media and well, s–t hits the fan. Lastly,we have Sharkey The Bounty Hunter, God! what are great title. It’ll be a bounty hunter tale following Sharkey as he tracks the galaxy in his converted, rocket-powered ice-cream truck with his 10 year old partner but there’s more! Sharkey is out for the biggest bounty of his career.

There you go, Netflix has one hell of a roster already and with Millar’s work added, this is all the more reason to get a subscription.
