Director For Deadpool 2 Provided Facial Capture For The Juggernaut

The coolest type of cheap and lazy.

Deadpool 2 was one hell of a fun flick and is perhaps one of the more light-hearted albeit violent entries in the X-Men franchise. There’s a lot of interesting little behind the scenes processes as to how the film turned out including the Brad Pitt cameo for which he did for a cup of coffee. There’s another little BTS process that seems just as interesting however and it relates to the character of the Juggernaut.

Juggernaut in Deadpool 2 served as a secondary villain who leads the young Russell Collins who will grow up to be Firefist towards a life of crime. Fans later learned that star Ryan Reynolds provided the character with a deepened voice but as for the face, it’s a different story.

In a featurette from the upcoming home release, Deadpool’s Lips Are Sealed: Secrets and Easter Eggs, it was revealed that director David Leitch provided the facial capture for the computer generated Juggernaut in the film. Reynolds discusses in the featurette:

Juggernaut really does take a village, Dave, I think, is the face. I did the body, like the motion capture, and I do the voice.

That’s pretty funny little thing to do and Leitch seems pretty happy with doing it himself or maybe even a little lazy and cheap but in a charming way. He adds:

So it just became efficient for time that instead of keeping a mo-cap actor around, I would just do the facial capture,

This is just a little fun Easter Egg for fans of the flick. Deadpool 2 was a massive success and it’s safe to say we can expect more in the future along with these moments of fun and absurdity sprinkled all over its production processes.
