James Wan Turns Over The Conjuring 3 Director’s Chair To Michael Chaves

Wan will act as “godfather” for The Conjuring 3.

The Conjuring has a new puppet-master in director Michael Chaves, who will take the reins off James Wan for its third installment. Chaves’ most recent film was New Line’s The Curse of La Llorona, which Wan produced and is due to hit theaters in 2019.

THR reports that Wan will still have a say on The Conjuring 3 acting as its “godfather.” “While working closely with Chaves on The Curse of La Llorona, I got to know him as a filmmaker,” said Wan, per THR. “Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares, make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film.”

The third Conjuring movie will once again focus on paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively. The latest movie in the universe, The Nun, is now the highest-grossing Conjuring movie worldwide.

“I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films,” said Chaves. “The movies are the rare combination that deliver both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again.”

The fifth Conjuring movie, The Nun, recently became the most profitable film in the franchise and set opening weekend box office records in markets around the world. There is still a lot of gas left in the tank of this haunted juggernaut, and New Line likely wants a trusted hand to come in and keep guiding it along. Hopefully, that means fans have a lot to look forward to in Llorona, and in turn that they can trust Chaves to fill Wan’s extremely big shoes behind the camera.
