Hereditary Director’s New Horror Film Midsommar To Be Released Next Year

In Ari we trust.

Ari Aster’s feature directorial debut horror masterpiece Hereditary is one of the year’s best films providing us with smart and effective horror that didn’t rely heavily on bulls–t jump-scares. He’s not done with the horror franchise just yet however as his planned sophomore effort is something that could really get those vibes back with his next film, Midsommar that will be released next year.

Starring Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth), Jack Reynor (Sing Street), Will Poulter (The Revenant) and William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) among others, the film would follow a couple as they travel to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival only to find themselves caught in a bizarre and violent competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Aster previously told THR that the film would be a “Scandinavian folk horror” and it definitely looks like it could deliver that with perhaps a little bit of The Witch elements thrown in.

Sounds awesome! It looks like Midsommar might have a little bit of Get Out vibes thrown in there and of course Hereditary itself with the whole cult stuff that everyone seems to be digging these days so this may very likely serve up an intense horror/thriller similar to what Aster managed to deliver earlier this year. The film is scheduled to be released on August 9, 2019 and of course it will be under the glorious A24 banner.

Filming for the film has begun in Budapest, Hungary so it’ll be some time till we get a trailer up. Hereditary was a fantastic film despite what some general audiences might think. Smart, creepy and intense are the best words to describe it and Midsommar is expected to be the same. In Ari we trust.
