Venom Crushes Fantastic Beasts 2 Opening Weekend In China

Sony is rolling in paper.

Venom may not really be one of the best films of the year but it sure as hell is one of the most commercially successful ones. It may have garnered mostly mixed reviews from critics but it’s box-office numbers have looked great since opening weekend. The film broke the record for biggest October opening raking in $80 million and is continually doing well with a worldwide gross of over $780.5 million.

It was a big gamble for the film but it looks like everything’s going wonderfully for Sony. It really was a wonder if Venom would actually do well especially without Spider-Man involved but the film proved itself capable having grossed more than the DCEU’s Justice League throughout its run. That’s not the only tent-pole blockbuster it’s crushing as it’s next victim comes from the Wizarding World.

Venom had a damn strong opening in China last week grossing $111 million. That’s understandable cause it’s opening weekend but it looks like the symbiote has latched on for another week, leaving its competitors in the dust. Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru reports on Twitter that the Tom Hardy flick held onto the #1 spot for the second weekend, earning $51 million. Trailing behind would be Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in its opening weekend with $37.5 million.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldThat’s not very good for the Wizarding World but it’s damn good news for Sony. One could attribute the earnings of The Crimes of Grindelwald to its reviews but to be honest, reviews for Venom‘s way worse. It could be the casting of Johnny Depp or perhaps a lack of interest in the Wizarding World but Fantastic Beasts better get it’s s–t together cause being the worst in the franchise and lowest grossing in the series is not a good look. Sony is rolling in dough however and they seem pretty confident moving forward with a Morbius film on the way.
