Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Spin-Off Movie Won’t Star Ray Park

They’re taking a different approach with this spin-off it seems.

The G.I. Joe films based on the Hasbro toy-line have never really been great but there’s more on the way including a spin-off centered on Snake Eyes. With RED director Robert Schwentke attached to take on directorial duties, there are still some questions to be answered especially in regards to who will be playing the mute ninja. We saw Ray Park in the role back in 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra along with its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013. With another G.I. Joe film and this spin-off underway, it’s a wonder what direction the films will be taking.

In regards to the Snake Eyes spin-off, chances of Park reprising his role seems small according to producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura. Speaking to /Film, DiBonaventura discussed a bit on the direction the spin-off would be taking which would apparently be an origin story revealing that Park would likely not be back. He said:

“Probably not, because we are going to the origin story, as you know in the comic book, you saw his face. And it is, I’ll say, the formation of a hero. So you’ve got to see somebody and it can’t be Ray’s age, unfortunately.”

Park who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace and more recently Solo: A Star Wars Story, is 44 so it would make sense to not have him back. With it being an origin story and all, we’re probably gonna see a younger actor taking on the role. You gotta wonder if general audiences still care for the G.I. Joe franchise or Snake Eyes but that won’t stop Hollywood. It’s hard to tell if this film would be any good but I guess only time will tell.
