The remakes just keep on rolling from the House of Mouse with plenty of live-action remakes of classic animated films to go around. No matter how stupid these ideas are, they’re gonna make them and people are going to see them cause film audiences have always been great at consuming things that are familiar yet devoid of substance since the days of yore. We’ve seen mostly lackluster live-action remakes from Disney in recent years and there’s going to be more including a bloody Aladdin remake featuring Will Smith as The Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.
This Aladdin remake doesn’t sound all too interesting which isn’t going to be much of a surprise at this point. We saw a teaser released not too long and although it’s something that could spark a little bit of nostalgia, it’s still nothing much to be honest. On the bright side, Guy Ritchie (Snatch and Sherlock Holmes) is directing so it could be pretty good and these new images of the film don’t look horrible… well except for maybe Will Smith as the Genie.
To be honest, the production design and shots look pretty damn good so we may have a nice looking Aladdin remake here. Massoud and Scott look good in their roles too so we can expect them to deliver but what the hell is up with Will Smith? What is he even supposed to be? Well, the effects aren’t finished yet for Smith’s Genie form according to EW but still, what the hell is up with that facial hair? Maybe I’m just not used to seeing Smith like this but perhaps it’s best not to be too hard on him since he has some serious shoes to fill following the legacy of the late Robin Williams.
