Norrin Radd AKA the Silver Surfer is probably one of Marvel’s most interesting and strangest characters. The humanoid with metallic skin who can travel through time and space with the aid of his surfboard-like craft was seen in a film that wasn’t particularly good. Of course, we’re talking about Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer portrayed by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne which can be considered a pretty underwhelming incarnation of the character.
There are plans for a Silver Surfer film to developed by 20th Century Fox with writer Brian K. Vaughan attached to write the script. However, information is still pretty scarce on the matter and with how Tim Story took on the character in the Fantastic Four film, one could hope that they would be able to pick a better director to helm the project. One acclaimed filmmaker is pretty interested in making a film surrounding the character with the likes of Anchorman and Vice director Adam McKay.
Speaking with MTV’s Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, McKay was asked on what Marvel character he would love to direct in film to which he revealed the Silver Surfer. He said:
“Silver Surfer man, that’s the one I want to do. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer, because visually that would be just be…You could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer, with the Silver Surfer. At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there man. Where a guy has to make the choice to save his planet…you know Norrin Radd has to save his planet…that, that would be the one.”
McKay is no stranger to Marvel films having co-written 2015’s Ant-Man so he does have some experience in comic book films. McKay himself has a pretty interesting resume himself having directed some great and strange comedies like the Anchorman films along with more “award bait” films like The Big Short and the more recent Vice. McKay would be an interesting director to take on the Silver Surfer but we’ll see how things pan out in the future.
