The Harley Quinn Movie Has Found Its Director

Yes! A female director is exactly what this movie needs.

It’s just in! Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are moving forward with the currently untitled all-female superhero/anti-hero movie, which will feature Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) front and center, and have chosen Asian American helmer, Cathy Yan to be in the captain’s seat.

Deadline reports that while the deal is yet to be finalised, we can fully expect Cathy Yan to be the second female director to join the DC gang. The first being Patty Jenkins, of course, who helmed the critically acclaimed and box office smash hit, Wonder Woman.

Almost similar to Patty Jenkins, Cathy Yan only has one feature film under her belt as of now. Her first feature, titled Dead Pigs has been making waves in the festival circuit and even won the Special Jury Prize — World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting — at Sundance, this past January. Hiring Yan is a step in the right direction for Warner Bros, a studio that in recent times, has seemingly been taking steps in very wrong directions as far as their DC properties are concerned.

This project is said to be based on the popular DC comic book series, Birds of Prey, which follows various female DC superheroes such as Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress. While Harley Quinn was never a core member of this group in the comics, I wouldn’t be surprised if Warner Bros and DC opt to go in that direction with the movies given the popularity of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
